Policy Discussion

Street vending is a crucial component of urban livelihoods, providing essential income sources, particularly for marginalized and vulnerable communities. Street vending, contributing to 14% of India’s urban informal employment, supports approximately 10 million vendors nationwide, offering affordable goods and services while fostering entrepreneurship among migrants and the urban poor. The Swatantrata policy meet-up emphasized the need to legalize livelihoods and remove legal and policy barriers by easing small business regulations and relaxing street vending laws. Furthermore, the Swatantrata team, led by co-founder Raghavendar Askani, engaged with Mahaboob Nagar collector Ronald Rose (IAS) to discuss the implementation of the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014, at district and city levels, highlighting the importance of effective local governance to protect and regulate street vending, ensuring vendors’ rights and integration into urban planning.
